Podcast 199: Postal Redemption

This week, we celebrate Christmas the only way we know how, by talking about a mailbox.

First it's Heri Simonsen interviewing podcast host Matthew Workman on Ras 2. They talk about Christmas traditions in the US, the G! Festival, and a certain reality show we will not name here. At the end of the interview, Matthew got to pick a Christmas song to play on the radio. We couldn't play it on the podcast, but you can listen to it on the YouTube link above.

Then, we talk mailboxes. We ran an episode in 2012 where we made fun of the giant mailbox on Sandoy. Indeed, the show claimed it wasn't even a proper mailbox. Listener Jogvan Thomsen thought we missed a great story, and he sent us a letter that basically said we blew it.

Turns out, Thomsen was absolutely right. So this week, we talk to him about the real story behind the mailbox, and how it was once part of a Christmas tradition on the Faroes.

Then we try to apologize to the mailbox... with tragic consequences.

As always, you can listen on our media player, on iTunes, or on Stitcher Smart Radio. Or you can download the show directly here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/faroepodcast/Podcast_199.mp3

Podcast 197: The Arctis Exchange

Photo: Sigga Vang
This week, we talk to American Artist Ray Maseman. He spent a month in the Faroe Islands as part of a program called the Arctis Exchange. It sends American artists to the Faroe Islands and Faroese artists to the US.

We talk to Maseman about his experiences in the Faroes how it changed his attitude towards his own art. If you'd like to see some of the art Maseman produced during his time in the Faroes, you can see some of it here.

And to end the show, we stand under a forlorn pair of billboards.

Podcast 196: Faroe Islands Whale Watch

This week, we talk to the people behind Faroe Islands Whale Watch. They spent the summer observing marine mammals in Faroese waters. We talk to them about their observations, and whether there is some other agenda behind their project.

Then we check in on four sperm whales that got stranded in Faroese waters. Two have died, but two others are still alive, but not completely out of danger yet. Related: here's the disgusting video that has gone viral around the world. It's a sperm whale blowing up in the Faroe Islands.

Podcast 195: Sheep to the Shear

This week, we walk out onto a hillside and watch people shearing sheep. Really that's about it, but there's still something fun and beautiful about it. There are still communities where the families go up into the hills, drive them into pens, then shear them my hand. We stumbled upon this scene while taking the scenic route somewhere else, and we just had to pull over and check it out. in addition to our audio podcast, we've got a video above that captures some of the scene that afternoon.

As always, you can listen on iTunes, on our media player at the top of the page, and on Stitcher Smart Radio.

Also, as a bonus this week, we've got a short story about the Portland Timbers produced by the host of this podcast, Matthew Workman. You can hear more stuff like it on the Portland Radio Project at www.prp.fm.

Podcast 194: Sjurdur Skaale and the EU

On this week's show, we continue our conversation with Sjurdur Skaale. He's perhaps the most famous comedian in the Faroe Islands and now represents the Faroes in the Danish Parliament.

We'll talk about how Danes view the Faroese, and Skaale will make an argument in favor of Faroese membership in the EU.

Then we'll take a tour of Torshavn with the CEO of Atlantic Airways.

Podcast 193: Back to the Haunted Tunnel

It's becoming something of a Halloween tradition here. Time to break out our spooky recording taken in the tunnels north of Klaksvik. What was supposed to be a routine recording turned into something far more frightening as screams could be heard throughout the tunnel despite the fact nobody else was there.

Ghosts? Who knows? But the sounds are scary just the same. We'll revisit our famous trip to the tunnels in 2010, then return three years later to see if the ghosts are interested in a repeat performance.

As always, you can listen on iTunes, our media player at the top of this page, on Stitcher Smart Radio, and on the No Agenda Live Stream. Or you can download the show directly here:

And if you're feeling extra brave, you can listed to the unedited audio of our first trip to the tunnels here.

Podcast 192: Faroes, Fish, and the EU

This week, we explore the dispute between the Faroe Islands and the European Union regarding fishing quotas. In recent years, the Faroe Islands has unilaterally increased their allowable catch of both herring and mackerel. That prompted the European Union to bar the import of Faroese herring and mackerel to the EU and ban most Faroese fishing vessels from EU ports.

But the story isn't that straightforward. Because of global warming and other factors, fish populations in the North Atlantic have moved since the last time fish stocks were allocated. Furthermore, the EU has imposed sanctions on the Faroe Islands even though the Faroes aren't members of the EU and the fish populations in question aren't found in significant numbers in EU waters.

So how to make sense of this tangle of politics, biology, and climate science? Hopefully, this week's show can help out a little bit. We're talking to Kate Sanderson, she's the head of the Faroe Islands Mission to the European Union and once headed the Faroese ministry that regulated that country's fishing fleet. She'll talk about the relationship between the Faroe Islands and the European Union, and about the current dispute. We'll also hear from a British MP Alistair Carmichael, who believes the Faroe Islands is squandering it's reputation of good fisheries management.

You can listen to this week's show on our media player above, on iTunes, on Stitcher Smart Radio, or on the No Agenda Live Stream. You can also download the show directly here:
http://traffic.libsyn.com/faroepodcast/Podcast_192.mp3

And we've got an online extra for this show. You can listen to an extended interview with Bjorn Kunoy. He's a doctor of international law and one of the lead negotiators for the Faroe Islands in this dispute. In this interview, Kunoy relates the history of the disagreement between the Faroes and the EU, and gives some of the legal arguments against the EU's actions. You can listen to the whole interview here. (Note: the audio quality on portions of this interview is not optimal... to put it politely.)

EP 191: Faroe Islands v. Austria, 23 Years Later

In honor of the Faroe Islands National Team playing Austria in a World Cup qualifier, we've got a special show. Heri Simonsen interviews Josef Hickersberger. He was the coach of the Austrian men's team when that team fell to the Faroe Islands in 1990.

Despite having his name forever tied to the Faroe Islands, he's never visited the Faroes until now. He's helping announce the game for Austrian television. Heri catches up with Josef and asks him about that fateful game 23 years ago and his impressions of the Faroe Islands now.

Podcast 190: Sjurdur Skaale, Four Years Later

This week, we talk to Faroese politician and comedian Sjurdur Skaale. When we first spoke to Skaale in 2009, he had recently been elected to the Faroese parliament and was a leading voice for Faroese independence.

Four years later, Skaale is now in the Danish parliament as one of two MPs who represent the Faroe Islands. He has also switched political parties, moving from the pro-independence Republic party to the pro-union Social Democratic party. We'll talk to him about his change of heart regarding independence and what it's like being Faroese in Denmark.

Then we buy an expensive tank of gas.

Podcast 187: Chasing the Eclipse

While the 2015 solar eclipse is still about 18 months away, tour operators are busy preparing for it. Hotel rooms in the Faroe Islands during the days around the eclipse have long since been sold out, and now an eclipse chaser is in the country looking for a good place to view the once-in-a-lifetime event.

Our good friend Heri Simonsen caught up with Kate Russo and asked her about chasing eclipses and the perils of trying to view a celestial event from one of the most cloudy locations on earth.

After that, we head out to the exceedingly sunny village of Haldarsvik (pictured above) and soak up a few hundred years of history.

Podcast 186: Faroe Tourism, Unleashed!

This week, we talk to Gurid Hojgaard about tourism in the Faroe Islands. Hojgaard is the head of Visit Faroe Islands, which is preparing to launch a new branding campaign promoting the Faroes as a tourist destination. In advance of that launch, they've released this spectacular video, which is well worth the three minutes it takes to watch.

We talk to Hojgaard about the past and future of tourism in the Faroes, and how to market a destination as "unspoiled" without spoiling it in the process.

Then we'll visit one of the most isolated villages on the island of Streymoy.

Podcast 184: Sakaris Stora and Faroese Film

The Faroese film scene is still in its infancy, but it's growing up fast with the assistance of better, cheaper technology and the return of Faroese filmmakers like Sakaris Stora (pictured above).

Sakaris's short film "Summer Night" screened at the G! Festival last month, and it's also a selection in the HollyShorts festival in Los Angeles. On this week's podcast, we talk to Sakaris about coming home to the Faroe Islands after finishing film school, the challenges of making a movie in the Land of Maybe, and the emergence of a distinctively Faroese film style.

Podcast 182: Foroyar 5.2

ORKA - Press Photo 2013 1
This week, we learn about Foroyar 5.2, the innovative musical installation that is a marriage of music and geology. Most of the sounds in the piece were created by traveling to the five seismic stations in the Faroe Islands, banging on nearby bedrock with sledgehammers, then taking the seismic information created by that action and turning it into audible sound.

The room where the piece is performed contains five video screens, one on each wall and one on the ceiling. While the piece plays the screens display images of the sounds being created at the seismic stations. No written description or sound recording can really capture what it's  like to be in the room when this piece is being performed, but on this week's podcast we'll give it a try anyway.

We'll hear a little bit of the piece, then talk to Jens Thomsen. He's the founder of the avant-pop group ORKA and the person behind Foroyar 5.2.

And before any of that, we'll listen to what it was like to land at the Vagar airport during the perilously foggy days last July (hint: everything was ok).

Podcast 176: Kickstarter Update and Utah Vikings

This week, we head out to a small town in Utah to figure out why people there are wearing helmets on their heads and shouting "harrrrrr" a lot.

And we've also got an update on our Kickstarter campaign. Our goal was to raise $975 in three weeks to offset travel expenses we'll incur while traveling to the Faroes to record more episodes this July. We reached that goal in less than 14 hours. There are almost two weeks left in the campaign, so now we've got a new goal. If we hit $3,000, then we'll use the extra money to schedule a winter trip and get the types of stories you just can't get in July (hint: the cold ones).

As of the time of this posting we're at about $1,600, so we're about halfway there. So it'll take some work to  nearly double that in the next two weeks. If you're interested in helping out, you can visit our Kickstarter page and toss a few dollars into the pot. If you toss in more than a few dollars, we've got a few ways to say thanks. You can read all about it on our Kickstarter page.

As always, you can listen to this week's show on iTunes, on the media player at the top of this page, on Stitcher Smart Radio, and on the No Agenda Live Stream. Or you can download the show directly here:

This week, we visit the French Consulate in the Faroe Islands. Yes, it actually exists and it's the home of Hanna Jensen. She teaches French in Gota, and has developed a deep love of France. So when the French government was looking for someone to be their consular officer in the Faroes, they knew just who to ask. We'll talk to Hanna about what the job is like.

Then we'll head 500 feet underground and take in some sound-art (pictured above).
